Sheng-Hao Sun's Award-Winning Medical Space Design

Combining High-Tech Aesthetics with Nature to Ease Pre-Surgery Tension

Sheng-Hao Sun's design for a Plastic and Aesthetic Department in Taipei, Taiwan, seamlessly blends high-tech materials with natural elements to create a calming environment for patients. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, is a testament to Sun's innovative approach to interior design in medical spaces.

Sheng-Hao Sun's design inspiration came from the desire to ease the tension of patients before undergoing medical cosmetic surgery. To achieve this, he used metal materials to convey a sense of high technology, while incorporating water features and green walls to create a soothing atmosphere. The result is a space that not only meets the functional needs of a medical facility but also provides a calming environment for its users.

One of the unique features of Sun's design is the use of the same materials for the floor and walls to link different spaces. This clever design approach, along with the soft designs of skylights and water spaces, creates a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces. The design also includes a lobby divided into three equal parts by cosmetic product walls, providing privacy and a sense of security for different groups of customers.

The design realization technology used in the project includes glass tiles, titanium-plating sheet, metal mosaic tile, stainless steel, laminate, and red glass. The use of these materials not only enhances the high-tech aesthetic of the space but also contributes to its functionality. For instance, the display wall is formed with mirror finished stainless steel folding irregularly into shelves, with red lighting that highlights the cosmetic products and stimulates customers' desire to purchase.

The design also includes private compartments constructed with laminate and glass tiles, serving as dressing rooms before surgery and recovery rooms after. These compartments, along with a white lighting island where patients can relax before surgery, contribute to the overall comfort and convenience of the space.

The project, which spanned from February to June 2016, posed several design challenges, including the integration of different travel lines for healthcare workers and patients and the construction of a space that is both beautiful and convenient. Despite these challenges, Sun's design was recognized for its outstanding expertise and innovation, earning the Silver A' Design Award in 2017.

In conclusion, Sheng-Hao Sun's design for the Plastic and Aesthetic Department demonstrates how innovative design can transform a medical space into a calming and comfortable environment for patients. His use of high-tech materials, natural elements, and thoughtful space planning not only meets the functional needs of the facility but also contributes to the overall patient experience.
