Little Zig: A Fusion of Ancient and Futuristic Design

Translating Abstract Art into Functional Lighting

The Little Zig table lamp, designed by Eve Fineman and Henri Preiss, is a unique fusion of ancient and futuristic design elements. Inspired by a recurring visual element in one of Preiss' abstract paintings, this lamp combines the earthy solidity of concrete with the ethereal glow of acrylic to create a striking and functional piece of art.

The Little Zig lamp is part of an ongoing collaboration between furniture designer Eve Fineman and visual artist Henri Preiss. The series aims to translate two-dimensional imagery into three-dimensional objects, resulting in designs that are both visually captivating and practical.

What sets the Little Zig lamp apart is its contrasting materials and production process. The acrylic shade, featuring a ziggurat formation, is produced using CAD drawings and a laser cutter, while the concrete base is cast using a mold. This digital fabrication technology allows for minimal waste and straightforward manufacturing.

With dimensions of 9.5"H x 9"W x 9"D, the Little Zig lamp is designed for easy use and maintenance. The shade rests on the base without any additional attachments, allowing for easy access to the LED bulb. The lamp is equipped with a dimmable, multidirectional bulb that provides a warm white glow. Rubber feet, designed as an inverted form of the base, not only provide stability but also protect surfaces from scratches.

The Little Zig lamp is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. Its structure ensures maximum stability, making it resistant to accidental damage or tipping over. The lamp features a sliding dimmer switch on the cord, giving users control over the overall brightness of the lamp.

The Little Zig lamp was designed and produced in Chicago, IL in 2016. It has garnered recognition and accolades, including being a top 10 finalist in the 'Established' category in the L A M P competition in Vancouver, Canada. The lamp was also exhibited at the Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago, IL as part of the Chicago Furniture Designers Association.

The creative process behind the Little Zig lamp involved translating a 2-dimensional element from a painting into a functional 3-dimensional object. The designers aimed to capture the concepts of ancient/future and earth/cosmos present in the painting, resulting in a lamp that embodies these contrasting elements. The geometries of the shade and base were carefully designed to minimize waste during the manufacturing process.

The Little Zig lamp is a testament to the power of collaboration between art and design. By bridging the gap between two-dimensional imagery and functional objects, Fineman and Preiss have created a piece that is not only visually captivating but also practical for everyday use. The lamp's ability to merge ancient and futuristic design elements makes it a truly unique addition to any space.
