It's All We Need: A Coastal Cottage Transformation

A Rustic and Transitional Design by Peter Stames

This 2400 square foot home, known as "It's All We Need," is a stunning example of a whole house residential renovation. The project, led by renowned designer Peter Stames, aimed to create a getaway cottage that seamlessly blends the charm of New England with elements inspired by Napa Valley and the Caribbean.

The transformation began with a complete gutting of the interior, allowing for a reconfiguration of the floor plan. The roof lines were redesigned, featuring perpendicular gables that add a touch of architectural interest. The ceilings were raised from 7 to 9 feet, creating a sense of spaciousness and openness throughout the home.

One of the standout features of this design is the use of textural board and batten and v-groove walls and ceiling finishes. These finishes not only add warmth to the space but also accentuate the rustic beams that were locally sourced and salvaged. The combination of these elements creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements the coastal cottage aesthetic.

Despite the limitations imposed by wetland restrictions, Archia Homes was able to make thoughtful additions to the original footprint. A small dining room addition, rear deck, and front porch were carefully integrated into the design, enhancing the functionality and charm of the cottage.

The design team also paid close attention to the choice of materials. The floors, made from fumed oak sourced from Virginia, add a touch of elegance to the space while maintaining a sense of rusticity. This attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship is evident throughout the entire home.

Completed in July 2016, "It's All We Need" stands as a testament to the transformative power of design. This coastal cottage not only maximizes the limited space available but also embraces the breathtaking views of the ocean from almost every room. It is a true sanctuary that offers comfort, tranquility, and a connection to nature.
