Nakka: A Zen Oasis in the Heart of São Paulo

Naoki Otake and Sidnei Tada's Award-Winning Restaurant Design

In the bustling city of São Paulo, a unique restaurant stands out among the crowd. Nakka, a Japanese restaurant designed by Naoki Otake and Sidnei Tada, offers a serene, Zen-like atmosphere amidst the city's urban chaos. This article explores the design inspiration, unique properties, and realization technology behind this award-winning architectural marvel.

With approximately 600 Japanese restaurants in São Paulo, standing out in such a competitive market is no easy feat. Yet, Nakka has managed to do just that, thanks to its unique design and ambiance. The inspiration for Nakka’s design was to create a space that offers more meeting areas, such as the grand bar, while also providing a Zen-like atmosphere. This is evident in the hanging bonsai gardens and the use of natural materials like wood, stones, and vegetation. The abundance of natural light further enhances the serene atmosphere.

The exterior of Nakka is as impressive as its interior. The facade features two different tones of wood, which smooth out the building volume and create a harmonious blend with the surrounding urban environment. This design choice not only makes Nakka stand out but also seamlessly integrates it into the cityscape.

Despite the competitive market, Nakka has found success due to its combination of great food, quality service, and inviting ambiance. The challenge for the designers was to replicate the success of the first location in Nakka’s second branch. The result is a design that is both unique and inviting, making Nakka a must-visit spot in São Paulo.

The design of Nakka was realized using conventional construction methods and wood. The project started in March 2016 and was completed in November of the same year. The 500 sqm restaurant is a testament to the designers' ability to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Nakka's unique design has not gone unnoticed. In 2017, it was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award. This prestigious award is granted to creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.

In conclusion, Nakka is more than just a restaurant. It is a Zen oasis in the heart of São Paulo, offering a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The unique design by Naoki Otake and Sidnei Tada is a testament to the power of architecture in creating spaces that are not only functional but also provide a unique and memorable experience for visitors.
