S-Assistant: Redefining Underwater Camera for Swimmers

Revolutionizing Swim Training with Data-Oriented Guidance

The School of Industrial Design introduces S-Assistant, an innovative underwater camera designed to enhance swim training by capturing and analyzing athletes' movements. With its unique features and data-oriented approach, S-Assistant aims to revolutionize the way coaches guide swimmers.

Swimmers rely on data to improve their performance, but it can be challenging for coaches to analyze their movements underwater. To address this issue, The School of Industrial Design embarked on redesigning the underwater camera. The result is S-Assistant, a cutting-edge device that records swimmers' data during training sessions, providing coaches with valuable insights for more effective guidance.

S-Assistant is equipped with two cameras, one underwater and the other above water, that automatically capture every move made by the athlete. The recorded data is then uploaded to a mobile application, which coaches can download to access and analyze the information. This data-oriented approach allows coaches to provide more specific and targeted guidance to different athletes, ultimately improving their performance.

Measuring at 70mm in width, 70mm in depth, and 400mm in height, S-Assistant is compact and easy to use. It can be wedged onto the swim-lane and activated through a Wi-Fi connection. The recorded data is seamlessly transferred to the mobile application, enabling coaches to access it on their devices.

The development of S-Assistant was not without its challenges. The design team faced difficulties in finding a suitable material that could withstand water tolerance. After numerous tests and experiments, they successfully identified the ideal material, ensuring the device's durability and functionality.

The project commenced in September 2016 at the LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and concluded in February 2017 at the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA. The team's underlying research revealed the importance of data analysis in swim training, highlighting the need for a device like S-Assistant to bridge the gap between athletes' movements and coaches' guidance.

S-Assistant has garnered recognition for its innovation and practicality. In 2017, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Sporting Goods, Fitness, and Recreation Equipment Design category. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the device's ability to meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

With S-Assistant, The School of Industrial Design has redefined the underwater camera, revolutionizing swim training by providing coaches with invaluable data-oriented information. This innovative device is set to transform the way swimmers improve their performance and achieve their goals.
