The client, a doctor who works in a clinic, desired a space that would not feel crowded and could be easily adapted over time. Inspired by the floating shape of the Kennedee sofa, Wang and Chen aimed to create a space that would serve as a canvas for personal expression.
The key feature of Flexible Residential is the use of walls that are not walls. In the barrier between the study room, living room, and dining kitchen, a marble tilted wall serves as both a decorative element and a display wall for artwork. Glass panels can be used to separate different areas, but when opened wide, the space seamlessly joins together.
With a total area of 210 square meters, Flexible Residential offers a flexible and modern living space. The design minimizes the use of woodwork, allowing the space to speak for itself. The goal was to create an atmosphere that can be easily changed by adjusting the furniture, while maintaining a sense of openness and freedom.
One of the main challenges in the design was making the beams and columns invisible. To achieve this, the designers created a ceiling with a dorm-like shape and integrated LED shaded lighting. This not only solved the issue of large columns in the space but also added visual interest and extended the height of the ceiling. The use of different ceiling heights also helps to separate the usage of different areas within the space.
Located in Taichung, Taiwan, the Flexible Residential project took three months to complete. The designers incorporated exterior materials into the site to create a barrierless and free-flowing space. The result is a unique and personalized living environment that reflects the owners' interests and memories.
The design of Flexible Residential was recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The project was commended for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
