Light Design Center Speyer, Germany

A Unique Lighting Exhibition and Shop

The Light Design Center in Speyer, Germany, designed by Peter Stasek, is a captivating space that showcases the latest light trends, technologies, and designs. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of a twister, this exhibition and shop creates a mesmerizing atmosphere that draws visitors in and allows them to experience light in a whole new way.

The Light Design Center in Speyer was conceived as a multifunctional space, serving as an exhibition area, consulting space, and meeting place. The goal was to create a design that would enhance the display of lighting objects without overshadowing them. To achieve this, Peter Stasek took inspiration from the twister, a natural force that creates a sense of weightlessness and new aesthetics.

The centerpiece of the showroom is a floating 3D twister sculpture, which sets the tone for the entire space. The reception desk, made from rusted steel, seamlessly blends with the upward spiral movement of the twister. This movement is also reflected in the floor covering design, creating a cohesive visual experience.

The use of untreated steel throughout the interior design further enhances the industrial yet sophisticated atmosphere of the Light Design Center. The gallery features a visible wooden ceiling construction, while plaster boards and rusted steel plates add texture and visual interest to the walls and ceilings. A camouflage net of the Norwegian Army acts as a division between the showroom and the gallery, adding a touch of intrigue.

One of the key features of the Light Design Center is the integration of color and light. The entire color palette of the space is based on non-colors, such as shades of white, anthracite, and gray. This allows the light objects themselves to generate color accents, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment.

The Light Design Center spans approximately 300 square meters and includes a main exhibition room, an integrated gallery, an office wing, and conference facilities. The project, which started in February 2011 and finished in November 2011, is located in Speyer, in the greater Frankfurt area of Germany.

Peter Stasek, the architect behind the Light Design Center, is known for his innovative MatrixX Architectures concept, which combines organic shapes, natural structures, and digital fabrication. His projects prioritize environmental soundness, sustainability, and corporate identity. The Light Design Center has received recognition for its outstanding design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2012 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category.

The Light Design Center in Speyer is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create unique experiences. With its twister-inspired concept, it offers visitors a journey into the world of light, where gravity seems to disappear, and the beauty of lighting objects takes center stage.
