Song's Club: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Blending Chinese landscape painting with contemporary design

Inspired by the spacial quality of Chinese traditional landscape painting, Song's Club, designed by Yongcai Huang, is a unique and innovative space that combines tradition with modernity. The club's design features gable walls formed in organic shapes, creating individual spaces that are interconnected and visually captivating. With its use of materials such as GRG, copper plating, stainless steel, marble, weathering steel, custom carpet, and wood floors, Song's Club is a testament to the seamless integration of art, architecture, and technology.

The gable walls in Song's Club serve as the defining element of the space. Varying in height and featuring openings, these walls not only separate the different areas of the club but also allow for communication and visual connections between them. The installation wall, made of reinforced steel and placed strategically within the space, adds an element of intrigue and playfulness. With the use of operating lights, the wall reflects its surroundings and projects captivating shadows, creating a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere.

One of the design challenges in creating Song's Club was the non-textured front reception desk/sculpture. The desk, made with curves reminiscent of lava and water solidified in a moment, sets the tone for the club's chaotic yet captivating ambiance. The abstract metal brickbats and "gable" lines formed by GRG further enhance the sense of contextuality and vagueness, creating spaces that are complete yet penetrable. This design approach draws inspiration from the Chinese landscape paintings of the Song Dynasty, where implicit spaces and ambiguity are celebrated.

The design of Song's Club goes beyond aesthetics; it aims to evoke emotions and create a memorable experience for its visitors. By integrating elements of the art of the Song Dynasty, the club becomes a representation of history and a portal to the past. It invites guests to appreciate and connect with beloved moments from the past while embracing the future.

Song's Club, completed in December 2014 in Guangzhou, China, has garnered recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2015. This prestigious award celebrates the club's exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovation. Song's Club stands as a testament to the power of design to merge tradition and innovation, creating spaces that inspire and captivate.
