Bamboo's Eatery: A Masterpiece of Design by Jaco Pan

Golden A' Design Award Winner Transforms Bamboo into Artistic Architecture

In the bustling city of Nanjing, China, a unique restaurant stands out, not just for its culinary offerings, but for its extraordinary architecture. Bamboo's Eatery, a creation of renowned designer Jaco Pan, is a testament to the transformative power of design and its ability to turn ordinary materials into extraordinary spaces.

Jaco Pan's inspiration for Bamboo's Eatery came from the concept of linear extension. The design spreads alongside the facade to the main entrance, leading the way to the Tea Break Area on the first floor. This area is adorned with a bamboo fence, creating a semi-space that forms the core function zone of the first floor - the Garden Fence. This innovative design approach creates a continuous two-party space relation, offering a unique dining experience.

What sets Bamboo's Eatery apart is its unique use of bamboo, plaster, and wood plates. The restaurant, spread over three decks, embodies the philosophy of Dissipation and modesty. The architect aimed to create an establishment that is not subject to serious architecture, but rather, a space that places dissipation into the re-arranged spatial order. This approach has resulted in a built space that offers a unique experience to its visitors.

The restaurant covers an area of 900 square meters and uses bamboo as its main design philosophy. This choice of material is not just aesthetic but also symbolic. In some parts of China, bamboo is representative of personal desires and ambitions. The restaurant includes three floors, each serving a different purpose - dining, tea break, and an exclusive teahouse. The architect's intention was to create a space that encourages visitors to explore themselves, rather than just mechanically operate within the space.

The design of Bamboo's Eatery was not without its challenges. The bamboo fence surrounding the Garden Fence had to be transformed latitudinally to connect the bar, dishes review, and service areas. This transformation had to be precise and close, ultimately leading to the elevator. Despite these challenges, the design team, led by Jaco Pan, was able to create a space that is not just functional, but also aesthetically pleasing and unique.

Bamboo's Eatery is a testament to the power of design and the transformative potential of common materials like bamboo. The restaurant was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a testament to its outstanding design and the creative genius of its architect, Jaco Pan. As a space that encourages exploration and self-discovery, Bamboo's Eatery is more than just a restaurant - it is a masterpiece of design.
