An Innovative Solution for Railway Maintenance

The Brake Valve Checking Workstation, designed by Anna Kholomkina, revolutionizes the process of checking brake valves for railway vehicles. Inspired by futuristic technologies and aesthetics, this workstation combines functionality, ergonomics, and visual appeal to create a harmonious and efficient design.

The Brake Valve Checking Workstation is a redesigned device specifically created for the task of checking brake valves. These valves are complex systems used to control the compressed air brakes of railway vehicles. The workstation consists of various components, including a workplace, an electro-pneumatic devices box stand, a part for reservoirs with compressed air, a part for brake valve control, a command circuit interrupter, a manual control valve, and connecting modules.

Anna Kholomkina's design process involved a thorough analysis of the existing prototype, studying its functionality and inner assembly. This research formed the basis for the workstation's redesign. Sketches and scale models were created to explore different forms and ensure ergonomic comfort for the operator. The final design was modeled using Autodesk 3ds Max and visualized with KeyShot. A scaled model was also produced to showcase the workstation's physical attributes.

The Brake Valve Checking Workstation offers several unique features and strengths. Its height reaches approximately 1610 mm, while the width of the connected system is around 3700 mm. However, the workstation's modular design allows for different arrangements and compact configurations, making it adaptable to various spaces and requirements.

Operating the Brake Valve Checking Workstation is a straightforward process. The different parts are connected via the connecting modules, ensuring a compact and efficient setup. The brake valve tested components are then placed in their designated locations on each workstation part. The operator sits at the workplace, runs a special program, and initiates the testing process. Upon completion, the test results can be printed using the integrated printer.

The Brake Valve Checking Workstation project was initiated in January 2016 in Moscow and completed in May 2016. It was exhibited at Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry and later at the Russian Railways design-construction design office in June 2016. The design process involved extensive research, including the collection of information about the prototype and consultations with product engineers from Russian Railways. This research, along with sketching and scale modeling, led to the creation of a unique and highly functional device.

Anna Kholomkina's Brake Valve Checking Workstation received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The workstation's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and aesthetic appeal contributes to a better world in the field of product engineering and technical design.
