Atelier Global Limited's Innovative Changsha Din Din Creativity Centre

Transforming Recycled Containers into a Vibrant Art Market

Atelier Global Limited, a renowned architecture firm, has transformed 27 recycled containers into a dynamic art market known as the Changsha Din Din Creativity Centre. This unique architectural project, which won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2017, is a testament to the firm's innovative approach to design and sustainability.

The Changsha Din Din Creativity Centre was inspired by the idea of creating an "art market" that encourages public participation. The exterior of the recycled containers serves as a canvas for creative expression, with tenants and the public invited to paint and polish the containers. The centre's icon, Din Din the yellow cat, is a blank slate that children are encouraged to personalize daily, further emphasizing the centre's focus on community engagement.

Atelier Global Limited's innovative design approach is evident in the unique properties of the Changsha Din Din Creativity Centre. The containers are casually positioned and stacked in a three-storey formation, creating a nomadic market vibe. The spaces inside the containers are partitioned into various workshops and sales points for pop art, designer items, and light food and beverage, offering a diverse range of experiences for visitors.

The realization of this design was achieved through the use of a supporting system of corner steel posts and horizontal spacers. This system allowed for maximum structural span and slim structural components, resulting in a visually transparent and interactive space. The centre's use of recycled materials extends beyond the containers, with standard size building materials, recycled oil cans, and ground paving gravels all being reused.

The centre's interactive circulation path is another standout feature. External steel staircases connect different floors, guiding visitors not only along corridors but also inside container rooms across various levels. This unconventional circulation pattern blurs the line between private and public spaces, fostering intimate encounters between visitors and designers.

Despite the challenges of a tight two-month construction timeframe, Atelier Global Limited successfully transformed the perception of conventional container stacking into a floating tectonic system with enhanced transparency for interactions. The project's customization allowed for high transparency between indoor and outdoor spaces, further enhancing the centre's interactive nature.

In conclusion, the Changsha Din Din Creativity Centre by Atelier Global Limited is a shining example of innovative and sustainable architecture. By transforming recycled containers into a vibrant art market, the firm has created a space that not only serves a functional purpose but also encourages public participation and interaction. This project serves as a reminder of the limitless possibilities of architectural design when creativity and sustainability are at the forefront.
