Amoeba: A Unique Coffee Table Design by Yoca Pvt Ltd.

Turning Discarded Wood into an Award-Winning Design

In a world where waste is a growing concern, Yoca Pvt Ltd. has taken a unique approach to furniture design. Their Amoeba coffee table, inspired by vernacular forms and the natural beauty of discarded wood, has won the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2017. This article explores the creative process and innovative design behind this unique piece of furniture.

The Amoeba coffee table is a testament to Yoca Pvt Ltd.'s design philosophy: to treat every natural element as precious and usable, not discarded. The table is crafted from the trunk of the rosewood tree, a material often discarded by furniture manufacturers. Each trunk is selected based on its unique shape and size, and then sliced into sections. The three segments are held together by brass rivets and sit on hand-crafted brass legs, inspired by the shapes of a Minaret and a Spinning Top.

Creating the Amoeba coffee table is a painstaking process that takes 30 days for each piece. The selected pieces of wood are aged by natural aeration, then stained and coated with a high gloss acrylic top coat to enhance the richness of the grains. The hand-sculpted brass legs are specifically placed based on the size and shape of the bark, ensuring each table is unique.

The table's dimensions vary due to the natural product used, but typically, the rosewood thickness ranges between 63.5 mm and 76 mm, with overall dimensions of 1220 mm (W) x 508 mm (D) x 407 mm (H). The design team behind the Amoeba coffee table includes Sarah Najmi Bilgrami, Syed Zayd Bilgrami, and Ahsan Najmi.

The design process involved extensive research into the geometry of the legs, exploring strength, stability, balance, and symmetry. Each table required a slight modification for the placement of the legs due to the natural shape of the bark. The creative challenge was finding barks that complemented each other to form a cohesive whole.

The Amoeba coffee table is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a statement about sustainability and innovative design. The table captures the synergies between two cells and translates them by connecting these wooden barks. The composition of the legs is specific to each table, making each piece unique. The beauty of the table lies in the assembly, how each bark comes together to form a shape. The intent is to retain much of the natural shape of the bark and not interfere other than treating it with stain and high gloss.

The Amoeba coffee table's unique design and sustainable approach have not gone unnoticed. In 2017, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award is a testament to Yoca Pvt Ltd.'s commitment to creating unique, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing designs.
