Andy Vernall's K Lamp: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Golden A' Design Award Winner Brings British Craftsmanship to the Forefront

Andy Vernall's K Lamp, a table lamp design that merges traditional British manufacturing processes with contemporary aesthetics, has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2017. The lamp's design, inspired by the slip casting technique, is a tribute to the enduring value of British craftsmanship in a rapidly evolving world.

Andy Vernall's K Lamp is more than just a table lamp. It's a testament to the enduring value of traditional British craftsmanship, a tribute to the country's rich manufacturing history, and a statement on the relevance of these age-old techniques in contemporary design. The lamp's unique silhouette, entirely crafted from ceramic, is a nod to the traditional process of slip casting, a technique developed in Great Britain in 1743 by ceramics pioneer Ralph Daniel.

The K Lamp's design is simple yet distinctive, designed to subtly complement a contemporary space. Its base houses the lamp, and the shade gently reflects the light into the room. This dispersed glow, achieved by an LED bulb, allows the lamp to be used in both ambient and working situations. The lamp's dimensions are 95mmx 195mm x 240mm, making it a compact yet impactful addition to any space.

But the K Lamp is not just about aesthetics. It's also about bringing manufacturing closer to home. In an era where the days of thriving British manufacture have sadly slipped away, Vernall's design is a conscious effort to empower the remaining British tradesmen. The lamp is slip cast, a technique familiar to Vitamin, who were involved with the uprising of British contemporary ceramics in the early 2000s. This connection to the movement has forged strong relationships with British tradesmen in the hub for ceramics within the UK that still run strong today.

The K Lamp project was initiated in 2014, with the goal of designing a lamp whose form was created entirely from ceramic. The project was completed when the lamp was released at Design Junction on September 20th, 2014. Since then, the K Lamp has been recognized for its innovative design and commitment to British craftsmanship, winning the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology.

Through the K Lamp, Andy Vernall has shown that it's possible to honor tradition while pushing the boundaries of design. It's a reminder that even in a world dominated by mass production and fast fashion, there's still a place for craftsmanship, for quality, and for designs that tell a story. The K Lamp is more than just a table lamp - it's a symbol of the enduring value of British craftsmanship in a rapidly evolving world.
