The Andromeda Project, designed by Luigi Toledo and Carlos Toledo, introduces a revolutionary tourist kayak that addresses the challenges of stability and hydrodynamics. This innovative design aims to make kayaking accessible to a wider audience by providing a safe and comfortable experience on the water.

Traditional tourist kayaks often require technical skills to paddle, lack stability, and suffer from poor hydrodynamics, which can discourage potential enthusiasts. The Andromeda Project seeks to bridge the gap between sport kayaks and fishing boats, offering a personal boat that combines high stability and hydrodynamics. Weighing only 28kg, this kayak outperforms plastic alternatives in the market, making it suitable for anyone, regardless of their skill level.

The Andromeda kayak stands out due to its unique properties and strengths. It is constructed using naval and aeronautical materials such as fungus-immunized wood, XPS (expanded polystyrene), fiberglass, and carbon fabric. This combination ensures exceptional durability and strength, making the kayak suitable for long-term use. The waterproof seat, made with elastic straps and a sloped backrest, provides optimal ergonomics and comfort for the user.

The bottom of the hull is designed to maintain linearity, even for users without advanced rowing techniques. The inclusion of floating chambers in the bow and stern, along with XPS plates on the sides, ensures that the kayak remains buoyant and unsinkable. These chambers are filled with expandable polyurethane, enhancing impact resistance and overall safety. The wider stern increases stability during turns, further enhancing user safety, while the sharper angle at the bow improves hydrodynamics, allowing for greater speed and efficiency.

Measuring 730mm in width, 3620mm in depth, and 530mm in height, the Andromeda kayak offers a comfortable and spacious experience for users of all sizes. Its design encourages physical exercise, providing a unique connection between the user and the surrounding environment. The interaction with the product is direct, from transportation to the water, where users can paddle, pilot, and navigate the boat to their desired destinations.

The Andromeda Project was developed between 2014 and 2015 in the city of Piracicaba. It emerged as the winner in the prototype transport category at the Brazilian House Museum competition in São Paulo in 2016. The design process involved extensive research, including qualitative and quantitative questionnaires with practitioners, teachers, and individuals interested in kayaking but deterred by the technical requirements of existing kayaks.

Overcoming various creative, technical, and research challenges, Luigi Toledo and Carlos Toledo successfully created a tourist kayak that redefines the industry. The Andromeda Project offers stability, hydrodynamics, and durability, making it an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced kayakers. Its innovative design and use of sustainable materials contribute to a better world, aligning with the principles of the A' Design Award, where it was honored with the Iron A' Yacht and Marine Vessels Design Award in 2017.
