Vaan R4: A Sustainable Sailing Yacht

Redesigning the Future of Luxury Yachts

Every year, thousands of boats reach the end of their life, contributing to massive CO2 emissions. Vaan R4, a sustainable sailing yacht designed by Igor Kluin and Nienke van t Klooster, aims to change this narrative.

The Vaan R4 is not just another luxury sailing yacht; it is a symbol of innovation and sustainability. Made from recycled aluminium window frames, traffic signs, and license plates, this yacht is about 100% recyclable at the end of its life. In addition to recycled aluminium, the designers have incorporated other sustainable materials such as cork decking, leather alternatives made from pineapple leaves, and upholstery from recycled cotton.

What sets the Vaan R4 apart is not just its use of recycled materials, but also its design and functionality. The yacht combines three key properties: an exciting sailing experience, luxury comfort and space, and sustainability. The monohull-like styling in a catamaran form factor, made of circular materials, creates a unique and visually stunning vessel.

Measuring 1280 cm in length, 706 cm in width, and 1950 cm in height, the Vaan R4 weighs 11,000 kg. Its design allows for an open transom, increasing contact with the water and enhancing sailing excitement and performance. Unlike most catamarans, the helm positions are located at the back, providing a more traditional sailing experience.

The Vaan R4 project began in 2017 with the first designs, and production is set to start in August 2019. By early 2020, the first Vaan R4 will be ready to set sail for customers. Throughout the design process, the team has conducted extensive research on recyclable materials and their performance, working closely with suppliers to select and test each product.

Designing a luxury yacht from recycled materials comes with its challenges. The team had to navigate the unspoken rules and expectations of yacht design while adhering to sustainable practices. However, these limitations fueled their creativity, leading to unique solutions and designs.

The minimalist design of the Vaan R4 is inspired by modern sleek monohulls and racing sailing yachts. The open cockpit provides a direct connection with the water, whether sailing or at anchor. The recycled aluminium building material is exposed in the matte aluminium "targa roll-bar," which also provides shelter during rough weather. The seamless connection between the active sailors outside and friends and family in the saloon is enhanced by the floors inside and outside being at the same level.

The Vaan R4 has been recognized for its excellence in design, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Yacht and Marine Vessels category in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

The Vaan R4 is not just a sailing yacht; it represents a new era of sustainable luxury. With its innovative use of recycled materials and its commitment to performance and design, the Vaan R4 is a testament to the possibilities of a greener future in the world of yachting.
