Arthur Ho's Progressive and Seclusive: Redefining Residential Public Spaces

Exploring the Interplay of Light, Shadow, and Space in Modern Architecture

Arthur Ho's award-winning design, Progressive and Seclusive, reimagines the concept of residential public spaces. Drawing inspiration from the contrasts between excess and void, light and shadow, Ho's design offers a unique perspective on architectural design and its impact on lifestyle.

Progressive and Seclusive is a three-dimensional public space that includes a lobby, backyard, and cellar. The two-storied high backyard, an open space filled with natural light, shadows, and green vegetation, serves as a connection between the lobby and the cellar. The entire architecture is characterized by a progressive line of movements, open and closed pathways, and bright and dim spaces. This interplay between the real and the virtual realm guides the residents on their way home.

Ho's design stands out due to its unique use of materials such as wood, metal, marble, and stone. The lobby, a space devoid of natural light, creates a cellar-like atmosphere with walls made of natural cut stone slabs and teak wood extending up to the ceiling. The bar area, defined by iron rust-colored steel and solid wood, adds to the soothing atmosphere, providing a respite for the residents from their daily fatigue.

The design concept is derived from the traditional Chinese "courtyard house", with the addition of one or more quadrangles of courtyard houses. Each quadrangle is decorated with different scenes, enriching the path to the living quarters with varying rhythms and moods. This innovative approach to design presents a unique blend of traditional and modern architectural elements.

One of the major challenges in realizing this design was creating a balance and connection between solid and empty spaces. However, Ho's innovative approach and meticulous attention to detail have resulted in a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The design project, which started in March 2014 and was completed in February 2016, was carried out in Taipei.

Progressive and Seclusive has been recognized for its exceptional design and innovation, winning the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
