Industrial Glam: A Fusion of Contrasts

Ken Thong and Emma Yap's Award-Winning Lifestyle Concept Studio

Ken Thong and Emma Yap's "The Roof" is a testament to the beauty of imperfection, a unique design studio that marries industrial aesthetics with glamorous elements. This innovative space, winner of the prestigious Golden A' Design Award, is a shining example of the "Industrial Glam" concept, showcasing a harmonious blend of raw and refined materials, functional smart home features, and a soothing ambiance.

The inspiration behind "The Roof" is the concept of "Opposite Attracts". The designers have skillfully combined contrasting elements such as cozy soft furnishings, glamorous decorations, and an automated smart home system against a rustic, industrial backdrop. The dark color palette juxtaposed with natural sunlight further enhances the soothing ambiance, illustrating the beauty of imperfection.

The design of "The Roof" is divided into two core areas: a Design Studio and a Showroom. The front of the shop features a stylish, loft-inspired showroom, while the back is transformed into an open workspace that stimulates creativity. The designers have harmonized a wide selection of contrasting design elements to produce a glamorous and highly sophisticated space that draws attention to unique visual focal points throughout the shop. Metal-framed folding doors provide clear segregation between the showroom and studio space, maintaining the integrity of the lofty design concept.

The realization of "The Roof" involved integrating raw materials such as cement, exposed bricks, and natural wood with refined finishes like quartz, marble, and glossy surfaces. Glamorous decor elements like crystal chandeliers, leather, fur, and mirror fixtures further enhance the aesthetic appeal. Functionality is also a key aspect of the design, with smart home automation features integrated into the shop lot.

The design process involved intensive research into the architectural structure of European buildings, the selection of building materials, the application of natural lighting, and the interaction with the surrounding environment. The designers also studied the science behind colors and their connection with human emotions. The result is a calming ambiance within a visually dynamic space that immediately puts visitors at ease.

Practicality and cost-efficiency were major focuses in the design process. The designers had to divide the shop lot into a showroom and a design studio while ensuring that each space is illuminated with a healthy amount of natural light to reduce energy consumption. Low-maintenance structures and durable materials such as natural wood, concrete flooring, and exposed brick walls were incorporated into the design, making it a practical choice for a commercial space while maintaining the authenticity of its design concept.

Ken Thong and Emma Yap's "The Roof" is a testament to the power of innovative design and the beauty of contrasting elements. It's a space that's not only visually stunning but also functional and efficient, a perfect embodiment of the "Industrial Glam" concept. This project serves as an inspiration for designers and architects worldwide, proving that with creativity and innovation, even the most contrasting elements can harmoniously coexist.
