The Art of Memory: The "Pure Scene" Cabinet by Kai Chang

Discover the Unique Blend of Art, Design, and Sentiment in the "Square Boxe of Memories"

Introducing "Pure Scene," a distinctive cabinet designed by Kai Chang that merges art, design, and sentiment. This innovative piece of furniture, also known as the "Square Boxe of Memories," is more than just a storage unit; it's a physical manifestation of cherished memories and a testament to the power of design.

Kai Chang's inspiration for the "Pure Scene" cabinet came from the idea of creating a unique art-style cabinet where each compartment represents a different travel memory. The cabinet is designed to be both functional and decorative, serving as a storage unit and a piece of artwork. The heavy logs are cut into neat square boxes and piled up to build a cabinet, which has both exhibition and storage functions. With its geometric shape and well-proportioned decoration, it is a piece of artwork on the appearance. Every box has an independent door which is designed not to cover the entire cabinet on purpose. It leaves 4 cm gaps for the convenience of users to open the door.

The cabinet's unique properties lie in its complex construction process. Each cabinet is cut into different sizes and then reassembled, with each compartment opening independently and in a different direction. This results in a unique aesthetic that sets it apart from other designs. The cabinet's design also takes into account the preferences of different family members, with each compartment's opening mechanism and location reflecting the age, height, and preferences of the family member it represents.

The "Pure Scene" cabinet was realized using heavy wood panels that needed to be strengthened with metal to achieve better bearing strength. The overall appearance leaves a 4 cm gap, ensuring that anything placed will not affect the gap. The cabinet also features a glass partition inside, ensuring that everything is controlled within the scope of the glass layer.

The cabinet's design is not just about aesthetics and functionality; it's also about interaction. The cabinet is designed to reunite a family of emotions, with each compartment representing a different family member's life background. Whether it's a father's mementos from work, a mother's keepsakes from her travels, or a child's favorite toys, each item placed in the cabinet tells a story and contributes to the family's collective memory.

The "Pure Scene" cabinet project started in July 2014 in Torino and finished in August 2016 in Taipei. It was a challenging project that required a deep understanding of residential space and a keen eye for design. The result is a unique piece of furniture that not only serves a practical purpose but also creates a space for families to share and preserve their memories.

The "Pure Scene" cabinet was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. It's a testament to Kai Chang's skill and creativity and a recognition of the "Pure Scene" cabinet's unique blend of art, design, and sentiment.
