Nuanced Light: A Stunning Transformation of an Art Deco Villa

Residential House Design by Joe Chen and Anthea Chien

The project transfigured the Art Deco villa of the 1920s, converging radiant lines and patterns into a harmonious composition of longitudinal and traversal sections. With meticulous attention to detail, Joe Chen and Anthea Chien have created a modern holiday villa that seamlessly blends iconic Art Deco style with contemporary luxury.

The Nuanced Light design stands out for its unique approach to the Art Deco style, balancing the modular mechanical repetition of the 1920s Euro-American style with a vocabulary of individualized softness. The result is a residential house that exudes grandeur while offering a modern and comfortable living space.

The design showcases the interplay of light and geometry, with repetitive patterns adorning the walls and light fixtures. Taking inspiration from the reductive decoration motif of New York architecture in the 1920s, the designers have incorporated metallic luster in the large panels of black, white, silver, and grey peripheral frames. This fusion of Western aesthetics and Oriental equilibrium creates a captivating ambiance throughout the villa.

Spanning an area of 413 square meters, the Nuanced Light design features carefully crafted spaces that prioritize functionality without compromising on style. The symmetrical configuration of the living and dining rooms is defined by black hexagonal woodblocks with golden rims, creating a sense of balance and elegance. The corridor seamlessly connects these spaces, while the diamond-shaped marble on the porch floor echoes the wall decoration, emphasizing the villa's subdued luxury.

The bedrooms showcase a thoughtful integration of storage and sleeping areas within an ordered framework. The intersecting lines, which dominate the design, become simplified upon entering the bedrooms, providing a serene and organized environment. The study-room cupboard doubles as a storage and display shelf, adding a touch of versatility to the space. Each room is carefully curated, with the dark blue of the boy's room softened by the beige white of the girl's room.

The Nuanced Light design project was initiated in August 2017 and completed in February 2018 in Taiwan. Throughout the design process, Joe Chen and Anthea Chien conducted extensive research to ensure the seamless integration of Art Deco elements with contemporary sensibilities. The result is a stunning transformation of a 1920s villa that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. The award acknowledges the design's well-thought-out practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements. The Nuanced Light design not only provides a fulfilling living experience but also contributes to a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
