Designing Villas that Harmonize with the Landscape

The Ridges project, designed by Aijaz Hakim Architect, is a stunning villa community located in Bhugaon, Pune, India. The site is heavily contoured on the edge of a lake, offering sweeping views of the hill range. The design of the 38 villas, known as Villa Sky, Villa Lake, and Villa Earth, embraces the natural topography and creates a harmonious living environment.

One of the unique features of the Ridges villas is their adherence to the ancient principles of vastu shastra, which dictate the positioning of all rooms. Every bedroom is ensuite, and the villas are designed to maximize cross ventilation and natural light. The use of local materials and the employment of skilled local artisans add an India-inspired touch to the design, creating a sense of authenticity and connection to the surroundings.

Technology is seamlessly integrated into the villas to enhance their performance and efficiency. The houses embrace smart home technology, with active systems running on automation to make lighting usage efficient. Lux and movement sensors activate lighting, and appliances are energy star rated. The design also incorporates water conservation techniques and green practices, such as rainwater harvesting to recharge groundwater.

The Ridges villas offer a range of amenities, including home theaters with complete capabilities, THX certification, and infinity pools for exclusive use. The pools are strategically located on the rooftop or rear deck, and they not only provide a luxurious feature but also act as evaporating, cooling features for adjacent villas at higher contours.

Construction of the Ridges villas utilized various technologies and techniques to ensure efficiency and sustainability. Pex plumbing, LED technology, solar water heating, photo voltaic electricity generation, heat-insulating exterior cladding, and the use of natural materials are some of the specifications that contribute to the overall performance of the design. The villas also feature low smoke fire retardant wiring and seismic-resistant structural design.

The Ridges project began in 2012 and was completed in 2014. Throughout the design process, the team faced various challenges, including respecting the terrain and minimizing intrusion into the earth. They also had to address the separation of light and heat in a hot tropical country and find local craftsmen and artisans who could produce modern craftsmanship while respecting Indian traditions.

The Ridges project has received recognition for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Construction and Real Estate Projects category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
