The inspiration for the CONTemporary Library came from the strong centric area of the ancient bath. Kostadinov and his team decided to supplement and strengthen its shape by arranging a library in its center, just below the dome. The entire composition curves around the center and metaphorically and literally climbs to the dome and the sky, creating a visually stunning effect.
The library, built entirely of wood, contains only books of contemporary art. It provides comfortable places to sit or lay, bookcases, magazines and newspapers shelves, as well as a computer with a rich and detailed multimedia and video archive of contemporary artists. The space can also be used for presenting contemporary art performances, making it a versatile hub for art enthusiasts.
The design team faced the challenge of creating a contrast between the shabby, accumulated layers of plaster on the walls and the ceiling, the cold brick and stone walls, and the warmth, clarity, and coziness that a natural material such as wood can provide. The result is a unique installation that respects its surrounding area and enhances its historical charm with a contemporary touch.
The construction of the installation lasted less than one week. It started in October 2012 and was finished just a week later for the opening ceremony of the festival for contemporary art Urban Dreams. Since then, the ancient bath has become the first and one of a kind Center for Contemporary Art in Bulgaria, hosting various contemporary art exhibitions in its halls.
The CONTemporary Library is not just an architectural installation; it is a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces and creating unique experiences. It is a celebration of art, history, and design, and a shining example of the innovative work of Vladislav Kostadinov and his team.
