The collection, which consists of 12 looks, is a testament to Zhang's innovative approach to design. Each piece is intricately crafted, featuring multi-layered garments that explore digital printing, digital embroidery, and elastic material weaving. The designs are not just about aesthetics but also carry a deeper meaning, representing the constraints of the Chinese examination system.
One of the unique features of this collection is the use of layered textiles. Zhang has consciously layered different materials to create thought-provoking silhouettes. The layering is not just a design element but also symbolizes the pressure and constraints of the Chinese high school examination system. The collection goes against the trend of over-simplified garments in mass production, bringing back craftsmanship with a contemporary aesthetic.
The realization of this collection involved a variety of techniques, including couture tailoring, digital printing, digital embroidery, hand waving with elastic bands, and bias fabric manipulation. Zhang started by weaving colorful elastic bands on netting fabric, transforming the 3D weaving into 2D digital printing. This innovative approach to textile design redefines the idea of fashion, striking a balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern technologies.
The project, which started in December 2016 in Chicago and finished in April 2017, faced several challenges. One of the main challenges was to revive vintage garment details and make them contemporary. Zhang experimented with traditional weaving techniques, transforming 3D weaving fabric into 2D digital printing. Another challenge was experimenting with digital embroidery on mesh fabric, finding the right balance between different thread types on stretch or non-stretch materials.
Traces is not just a fashion collection but a statement. It is a critique of the oppressive Chinese examination system and a celebration of the beauty found in the traces left behind. The collection was awarded Platinum in A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2018, recognizing its exceptional design and innovation. The award is a testament to Zhang's talent and her ability to push the boundaries of fashion design.
