Xtension: A Revolution in Lighting Design

Andrea Cingoli's Award-Winning Multifunctional Light

Andrea Cingoli's Xtension, a multifunctional light, has revolutionized the world of interior design. Inspired by architectural mechanisms used in building repairs, this adjustable lamp offers limitless possibilities for customization and interaction, making it more than just a lighting fixture.

Architecture and travel inspired the creation of Xtension. Cingoli drew from the mechanisms used to stabilize buildings during repairs after the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake. The lamp can extend from 1500 mm to 3000 mm, making it versatile enough for any room in a household or commercial space.

What sets Xtension apart is its unique properties. It's the first fully adjustable lamp in all its forms, capable of extending, retracting, and fastening to uneven surfaces through its spherical latch points. This adaptability allows it to become a living part of one's decor. When installed in a cluster, it can serve as a communication element, with programmable LEDs indicating what's happening behind a door or providing directional cues. All these features can be controlled via a mobile app.

The lamp's body is made of aluminum and steel, with a brushed or polished finish. It uses three LED strips on the outside and a LED bar on the inside, all of which can be dimmed and are RGB. The rotating heads at the extremities are made of chromed or brushed steel and house the electronics that regulate the LED with a remote Bluetooth connection.

With dimensions of W100mm x D100mm x H1500mm, Xtension can extend up to 3000 mm. The lamp is sold in a tube-shaped package with a carrying strap, making it easy to transport. The package is labeled "BUILD YOUR SPACE," highlighting the lamp's ability to create and characterize spaces.

The project began in February 2016 and was completed in October 2016 in Teramo. Cingoli's design research focused on creating conceptually intelligent objects, believing that intelligence should precede connectivity, electricity, and automatism. The goal was to create an object that communicates with its user through its form and conceptual and constructive essence, rather than relying on a manual.

Xtension is not just a lamp, but a new way of decorating. It was awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding design and trendsetting creation that advances art, science, design, and technology.
