Echo: A Multifunctional Tea Set Inspired by Ancient Chinese Architecture

Transforming Legends into Daily Supply

The Echo tea set, designed by Cong Ma, draws inspiration from the ruins of the Dabao'en Temple of Buddhists in Nanjing, one of the seven wonders of the medieval age. This unique tea set combines functionality with cultural significance, offering users a taste of gracious life.

The Echo tea set is a creative design that seamlessly blends ancient Chinese architecture with modern functionality. The octahedral shape of the pot lid is derived from the flying eaves of the pagoda, while the pot body takes inspiration from the temple's architecture. The tea cups, resembling wind bells, sit on each side of the pot, silently chatting with each other and waiting for historical echoes.

What sets the Echo tea set apart is its multifunctionality. It is not only designed for tea use but also for burning incense, creating calligraphy ink, and storing small objects. The pot and cups are made of porcelain with celadon-glazed and metal-glazed decoration, while the tray is made of tepid red sandalwood with unique swastika patterns. The middle spare space can be used for tea washing, producing ink with pine ash, or burning incense for introspection or personal enjoyment.

The Echo tea set's dimensions are 220mm in width, 220mm in depth, and 181mm in height. Its design not only offers the core functions of a modern tea set but also embodies the charm and elegance of traditional Chinese art. The passion for ancient art, the pursuit of elegance, and the fusion with modern life are all reflected in this exquisite design.

The Echo tea set project started in January 2016 in Nanjing, China, and was completed in August 2017. It has received recognition for its exceptional design, winning the Reddot Award 2016 Best of the Best. The tea set will also be exhibited at the Triennale di Milano in April 2018.

Cong Ma's research for the Echo tea set focused on helping people experience the long history of cultural legends in their everyday lives. By incorporating elements of the glazed tower, the legend of Buddha's head relic, and religious values, this tea set allows users to immerse themselves in Chinese culture while enjoying tea, calligraphy, and incense burning.

The design of the Echo tea set presented a challenge in transforming the legend of the Dabao'en Temple into a daily supply. However, through careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, Cong Ma successfully captured the essence of the temple's architecture and translated it into a functional and aesthetically pleasing tea set.

The Echo tea set is not only a practical and innovative creation but also a winner of the prestigious A' Design Award. Recognized for its well-designed features, practicality, and integration of industry best practices, this tea set contributes to a better world by providing users with a fulfilling and culturally enriching experience.
