QWERTY: A Sofa That Transforms Work into Comfort

Andrea Cingoli's Award-Winning Design Offers a Unique Blend of Functionality and Irony

Andrea Cingoli's innovative QWERTY sofa bed is a unique fusion of comfort and technology, inspired by the familiar keyboard layout. With adjustable key-cushions controlled by a remote, QWERTY offers a customizable experience, challenging the conventional notion of furniture.

Andrea Cingoli's inspiration for QWERTY came from the countless times he found himself falling asleep on his computer keyboard. The design transforms this universal experience into a comfortable and adjustable surface. The sofa bed, with its soft keys, adds a touch of irony to our daily life, both at home and in the office.

QWERTY stands out with its unique properties. Beyond being a sofa bed, it features micro electric motors that allow each key-cushion to be adjusted via a remote control. This innovative feature offers total freedom to the user, transforming the furniture into a unique and comfortable support.

The sofa is made of stainless steel AISI 304, multi-density polymer, artificial waterproof and flame retardant leather, electrical and software equipment, and latest generation gel batteries. It measures 1100mm in width, 3100mm in depth, and 1100mm in height, offering a luxurious and flexible seating solution.

QWERTY's design process, which took place in Teramo in 2012, focused on user experience and the combination of a functional tool with an image archetype. The aim was to produce an innovative object that guarantees flexibility and functionality, while maintaining the familiarity of the object we're used to seeing. This innovative approach led to QWERTY winning the IDA Gold winner 2013 in the category of the professional home interior products and the subcategory of interior furniture, and the Red Dot Award Design Concept 2016 in the furniture category.

The main challenge in designing QWERTY was to incorporate an extraordinary functionality into an object so familiar to us. The result is a transfer of effects between the user and the object, creating a unique interaction. This design is patented under Patent No. 001339253-0001 and Patent No. 001339253-0002, held by Andrea Cingoli. Furthermore, it was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
