Inspired by the rich heritage of African tribe art, Peilian Ye believes in combining traditional costume with modern design elements and innovative techniques. To express her ideas, she drew inspiration from the printings of Pablo Picasso and the sculptures of modern cubism. By transforming different shapes and elements into patterns using various techniques, Ye has created a collection that is truly one-of-a-kind.
What sets Tribe Variant apart from other designs is its meticulous attention to detail and unique aesthetic. Each look in the collection has been meticulously crafted using a range of couture techniques such as printing, embroidery, applique, and binding. The garments feature a mix of strong graphic prints and ample materials, resulting in a visually striking and cohesive collection.
Tribe Variant consists of seven outfits, each showcasing Ye's mastery of fabric manipulation and design. The collection incorporates a variety of fabrics, including mesh, jacquard, synthetic leather, organza, Mongolian fur, and wool. The use of fringe, feathers, colorful thread, and metal zippers adds an extra touch of detail and visual interest.
Not only does Tribe Variant excel in design, but it also prioritizes wearability and comfort. Ye has carefully balanced innovation and comfort, ensuring that each piece in the collection is not only visually stunning but also practical to wear. For example, close-fitting items are made using printing jersey fabric to ensure a perfect fit.
The Tribe Variant collection was developed as part of Peilian Ye's master's degree in art at the University of Southampton in the UK. The project started in March 2016 and was completed in September 2016. The collection was showcased at the Vinyl Factory during London Fashion Week 2016, garnering attention and acclaim.
Peilian Ye's research for Tribe Variant involved studying various books on folk costumes, African culture, and body art. She also drew inspiration from the works of Pablo Picasso and modern cubism. The collection is a result of extensive experimentation with digital printing, heat transfer printing, machine embroidery, and handmade and machine sewing.
Tribe Variant was not without its challenges. Ye faced the difficulty of maintaining balance and harmony within the collection due to the use of different fabrics, colors, and techniques. Additionally, the handmade blue binding and applique required meticulous attention to detail and time to produce.
Tribe Variant is a testament to Peilian Ye's creativity, technical skill, and dedication to her craft. This unique collection has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel, and Garment Design category in 2018. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
With its captivating fusion of African tribal art and modern cubism, Tribe Variant is a true work of art. Peilian Ye's innovative techniques, attention to detail, and unique aesthetic make this collection a standout in the world of fashion.
