Hermitage Retreat: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Sunil Hu'mane's Award-Winning Design Marries Vernacular Architecture with Modern Technology

Hermitage Retreat, a recreational home designed by Sunil Hu'mane, is a testament to the seamless integration of traditional elements with innovative structural systems. Drawing inspiration from the scenic environment and the client's nostalgic memories, this design has been awarded the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018.

The design is a contemporary interpretation of vernacular domains, a unique property that sets it apart from other designs. The house is a self-sustaining structure, designed to survive on natural energy resources with minimal intervention. The site, located on a hillock with panoramic views of the mountains, has a crucial terrain that has been respected and incorporated into the design.

The realization of this design is a reflection of the sincerity of each material used. The structural system is of a composite nature, consisting of form finished concrete, local basalt stone, Kadappah stone, and teak wood. The courses of ashlar masonry have been intricately designed with due projections on the facade to create dynamism through shade and shadows.

The design's interaction with its surroundings is another noteworthy aspect. A simple and linear floor plan allows continuous exposure to the beautiful mountain views. The edge to edge openings keep the house naturally ventilated and lighted, while the carefully planned toilet courtyard provides a space for solitude and reflection.

The design project, located in the outskirts of Pune, India, was completed in November 2016. The design process involved personal surveys of nearby villages to study regional vernacular architecture. This research helped to create an architectural language that blends modern technology with traditional materials and techniques.

Despite the challenges of building with minimal intervention to the natural ecosystem and matching the design with the clients' personal associations and memories, the Hermitage Retreat stands as a successful example of urban regionalism. It is a testament to the potential of design to create spaces that are both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.
