CoMED: A Chameleon in the Cityscape

Andrea Damon and Andreas Doser's Innovative Residential Design

CoMED, a unique residential design by Andrea Damon and Andreas Doser, is a marvel of modern architecture. With a façade that changes color like a chameleon, this residence is a refreshing addition to Vienna's cityscape. The design's inspiration, unique properties, realization technology, and challenges are explored in this article.

CoMED is a four-storied residence with a façade that changes color with the sky. During the day, the façade appears blue, while at dusk, it turns red, and in darkness, it exhibits a floral pattern. This chameleon-like quality sets CoMED apart from other residences, adding a unique aesthetic to the cityscape. The design also incorporates nature, with green spaces on every indoor living area, a courtyard tree, and a small but valuable roof garden.

The house sits atop a plot like a jumping facility, with a pool area docked on the southern side. The pool projects from the house, connecting with a balcony on the four-storied structure. The design seamlessly merges the residence with the surrounding natural slope, creating a harmonious blend of architecture and nature.

CoMED is constructed with a combination of concrete, steel, and plywood building elements. The façade is covered with aluminum composite panels that reflect the sky, dematerializing the volume of the house. Some of these panels are sloped, creating a smooth transition from horizontal to vertical surfaces. This design approach has generated unique features like the roofed entrance and the balcony on the southwest.

The residence spans a width of 13+3 meters (including the garage) and a depth of 13 meters, with a height of 12 meters. It offers 400 square meters of living area and a pool area of 6.3 meters in width and 13.5 meters in length. The plot size is 1000 square meters, providing ample outdoor space.

One of the challenges the designers faced was integrating modern architecture into an area with traditional houses. The complex shape of the design was hard to visualize, but the designers' keen sense of design and attention to detail resulted in a unique and aesthetically pleasing structure. The design also had to accommodate the natural slope of the plot, which was achieved by creating a folding garden sculpture to use the difference in altitude and create sitting and plant areas with the required stairways.

CoMED is a testament to the innovative design approach of Andrea Damon and Andreas Doser. It's not just a residence; it's a unique architectural marvel that enhances the cityscape and offers a unique living experience. The design was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding and trendsetting design.
