The Wanda Xifeng Bridge, designed by Ke Wang and his team, draws its inspiration from the phoenix, an auspicious bird symbolizing peace and harmony in ancient Chinese culture. The bridge's unique design, reminiscent of spread-open wings, is a visual representation of the omnipresent and spiritual power of wind, combined with the supreme power symbolized by the emperor in Chinese culture.
Ke Wang's innovative use of color and material sets the Xifeng Bridge apart from other architectural designs. The combination of red, symbolizing energy, vitality, willpower, fire, and power, and wood, symbolizing calmness and warmth, creates an intimate feeling of returning to nature. This blend of colors and materials, along with the bridge's polyline shape, results in a simple, clean, comfortable, and stylish space atmosphere.
The bridge's paving design further enhances its aesthetic appeal. The stylish blend of dark gray and light gray granite, arranged in dynamic lines, creates an active space that echoes the bridge's theme. This design element transforms the bridge into a stylish waterfront plaza, further enhancing its appeal to both locals and tourists.
The Xifeng Bridge is not just a visual marvel; it also serves as a functional public space. The bridge's landscape area spans 5000 square meters, providing ample space for pedestrians. The bridge piers, inspired by auspicious clouds symbolizing "Origin symbiosis, harmonious communion," add to the bridge's aesthetic and functional appeal. Additionally, the deformation planting bed provides seating benches for people to rest, and group greening on the two sides of the steps create a softer and more natural space.
Ke Wang's Wanda Xifeng Bridge is a testament to the power of innovative design. Its unique blend of traditional inspiration and modern design elements, coupled with its functional features, make it a worthy recipient of the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award. As a symbol of peace and prosperity, the bridge stands as a beacon of architectural innovation in Qingdao, Shandong, China.
