Brewing Feast with Art

Commercial Space Design by Yung-Cheng Wei

The Tea Ceremonial rituals and Purple Clay Teasets both carry abundant aesthetic history and craftsmanship rooted in the oriental culture. This insight is the basis for creating a space with the harmonious spirit and for inducing the serenity of balance. The design outputs express such timeless values of respect and humility that exists between the subject and guests effortlessly.

The Brewing Feast with Art design by Yung-Cheng Wei is a unique and tastefully gallery-like space that showcases the one and only Master made purple clay teapot, teasets, and aged Pu’er teacakes of the highest auctioned quality. This transformation of an inconspicuous space reveals the fundamental factors specific to its functionality. The environment and ambience created alleviate the depth of understanding towards this unique art and craftsmanship.

The entrance door of the space is a prominent feature, with a concentric circle formed using metal bicycle chains surrounded by wood handles. The see-through glass in the middle of the door provides a view for calligraphy and floral displays. Steel cables hold the cast-iron framed cabinets from ceiling to floor, while black velvet lines the inside of wood surfaces. Recessed lighting adds to the timeless theme that extends from the outdoor to the indoor.

The internal floor space of the Brewing Feast with Art design measures 198.39 square meters. The design incorporates elements of Te Art, Zen, and Taichi, as well as the renowned Master Gu, Jingzouj’s craftsmanship, to deliver a design that goes beyond the mediocre. The design aims to envelop sensations of aroma, taste, temperament, touch, and visual perceptions into the core design elements, creating a harmonious balance.

Ancient charm and timeless quality are demonstrated throughout the design. Classic curves on Taishi style guest chairs are remade with stainless steel wishbone backs, silk cloth wraps add an exquisite touch to display surfaces, and slate façades with hand-carved textures create a unique visual appeal. The use of woods such as Tochigi, Chinese fir, indus, and spruce further enhances the overall aesthetic. The Brewing Feast with Art design is located in Taichung City, Taiwan, and was completed in September 2014.

The design of Brewing Feast with Art is a result of careful research and a deep understanding of the tea ceremony. Each element in the design has its distinctive identity, but when combined, they bring out the marvels of their combinations. The design methodology and techniques applied to this project fuse everything smoothly, creating an authentic showcase for the one and only objects, whether it be a piece of Pu’er teacake or a piece of the Purple clay teapot.

The Brewing Feast with Art design faced challenges in integrating the conceptual aspects of Te Art, Zen, and Taichi, as well as the renowned Master Gu, Jingzouj’s craftsmanship. However, through a simmering process that converged the most exquisite qualities of these abstractive philosophies and phenomena, the design achieved a harmonious balance that appeals to the senses of aroma, taste, temperament, touch, and visual perception.

The Brewing Feast with Art design, transformed from a plain store-like ground floor to a gallery that embraces the spirit of "balance and harmony" exemplified in the art and culture of the Tea Ceremony. It showcases the finest and most exclusive Pu’er tea and the renowned world-class Purple clay teapot crafted by Master Gu, Jingzou. The design engages the senses of touch, smell, sight, and taste through various unique presentations installed in the space. It is a curatorial project that has been rebirthed as a connoisseur piece of artwork itself.
