Shadow Wall Tiles: A Revolution in Design and Sustainability

Designers Xu Gang and Chen Wei-Kang Innovate with Recycled Materials

The inspiration behind the Shadow Wall Tiles lies in the rapid pace of industrialization and urban development. The designers recognized the increasing amount of ceramic waste being discarded and dumped in landfill sites, leading to environmental pollution and loss of farmland. They saw an opportunity to recycle these wasted materials, turning them into a unique and functional design element.

The Shadow Wall Tiles are made from cement, aggregated with ceramic waste that contributes to 50% of the material's weight. This results in an efficient recycling of wasted materials. The tiles' design is based on the principle of light and shadow imaging. Despite their planar form, they present different shades of shadow with grooves of different depths, creating a visually three-dimensional effect that enhances the room's extensity.

The tiles are moulded as a whole, with dimensions of 300 x 300 x h12 mm and a weight of 2.23 kg. The contrast between light and shade results in a visually three-dimensional effect, making the room impressive. The tiles are designed to challenge perception, changing their appearance depending on the viewing angle.

The project started in September 2016 and was completed in January 2017. It was exhibited in The Red Dot Design Museum Essen in July 2017. The design was awarded Silver in A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award in 2018, a prestigious award given to designs that demonstrate remarkable expertise and innovation.

The Shadow Wall Tiles represent a breakthrough in conventional thinking. By developing an innovative way of presenting a three-dimensional visual effect, which depends on changing light and viewpoint, the tiles offer great visual impression and satisfaction. They also make full use of resources and reduce waste, embodying a commitment to sustainability and responsible design.
