Spot: A Multifunctional Sofa Revolutionizing Living Spaces

Vinicius Lopes and Gabriela Kuniyoshi's Award-Winning Design Fuses Comfort, Functionality, and Aesthetics

Spot, a multifunctional sofa designed by Vinicius Lopes and Gabriela Kuniyoshi, is a revolutionary piece of furniture that redefines the concept of living spaces. Inspired by contemporary lifestyle habits and the need to foster human interactions, this design offers a unique blend of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics.

The inspiration behind Spot stems from the designers' keen observation of modern living habits and their desire to stimulate human interactions. The sofa combines different materials and coatings, such as Freijo wood, leather-covered painted steel, and knitted fabric, to create a cozy and tactile environment. The design is not just about aesthetics; it aims to create a space where memories can be formed.

Spot is not your average sofa. It is a comfortable seating solution that doubles as a study, work, and storage space, complete with a facility to recharge electronic devices. The backrest length and number of arms can be customized, offering various configurations to suit different layouts and needs. This adaptability makes it an ideal choice for both large and small spaces.

The sofa's unique properties are brought to life through a combination of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. The arm, desk, and shelf are made from steel plate, laser cut, folded, welded, electrostatically coated, and then upholstered with genuine leather. The backrest is made from wood and Freijo veneer, while the seat is structured with Cedar wood and springs, padded with foam. The cushions are padded with feathers, and the side box is covered with Freijo veneer, made using traditional woodworking techniques.

Spot's interactive design allows it to serve multiple functions. The desk placed at the back of the backrest can be used for studying and leisure activities, and can also function as a sideboard. The arms and shelf can be used to place personal items, while the wooden side box with two lids and a sliding tray serves as a storage space, a side table, and a charging station for electronic devices.

The design project, which began in December 2016 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was unveiled to the public in June 2017. The project was a response to the changing family dynamics and the evolving needs within the family room. The design of Spot aims to fulfill these needs, offering a new perspective on the furniture that surrounds our daily life and fostering a welcoming and functional environment that stimulates human relations.

This innovative design has been recognized with the prestigious Platinum A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. This award is a testament to the designers' exceptional creativity, professionalism, and their contribution to societal wellbeing. Spot truly embodies the defining aesthetics of the era, pushing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and making the world a better place.
