Drum: A Unique Pouf by Serge Atallah

The Drum pouf is distinct in its design, with the shape of the seating being the negative shape of a steelpan instrument. This subtle nod to the instrument is more felt than understood, creating a sense of intrigue and interest. The void under the seat is designed to give a feeling of zero gravity while still being functional for use. The pouf is composed of two main parts: the seat made of PU foam and textile upholstery, and the lacquered or chromed steel frame. The seat is fixed to the frame with leather straps, adding a touch of sophistication to the design.

The Drum pouf is available in three sizes, allowing it to be assembled in a variety of ways and materials. It can be complemented by a wide range of lounge poufs and sofas, making it a versatile addition to any space. Whether staged in a hall or at home, the Drum pouf can be clustered together to create a free and fluid composition.

The project started in April 2017 and was completed in February 2018. The underlying research for this design was focused on using a transitional item to express a special feeling through the furniture. The goal was to apply these identifiers on a pouf and express music, happiness, and weightlessness. The main challenge was to create a qualitative pouf that could convey a message of fun and happiness, and to express positivity through a basic piece of furniture.

Drum is more than just a pouf; it is a piece of furniture that promotes a feeling of weightlessness. This aspect is complemented by a blink evoking the creole steelpan. The design targets the monotony and stark landscape of some office spaces, breaking it with something special and unusual. The Drum pouf is a testament to the designer's ability to create a piece of furniture that not only serves a function but also promotes a positive atmosphere in any space it occupies.

The Drum pouf is protected by INPI and ONPI patents, and the design is credited to Serge Atallah.
