Pisanica Garden Furniture: A Contemporary Terrace Design with a Traditional Twist

Bringing Slovenian Art to Life in Outdoor Seating

Pisanica garden furniture, designed by Eva Strukelj and Ignacio Lopez Sola, is a unique blend of contemporary design and traditional Slovenian art. Inspired by the intricate patterns found on Pisanice, painted eggs that are a cultural treasure in Slovenia, this furniture brings a touch of heritage to modern outdoor spaces.

A standout feature of the Pisanica garden furniture is its attention to detail from all angles. Designed to be placed in the middle of a terrace, with windows facing towards it, the furniture had to be equally attractive from all sides. The result is a lounge-style seating arrangement that doubles as hidden storage, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics.

The design incorporates a narrow-wide pattern of ornamental stripes that run from the feet up to the back and to the back side of the furniture. Within this pattern, a unique feature emerges - a small herb planter that follows the same design language. This planter adds a touch of greenery and further enhances the overall visual appeal of the furniture.

Creating the Pisanica garden furniture required a meticulous process. The designers started with a 3D model, followed by a 1:1 scale model to confirm the seating dimensions. A detailed 3D model of the metal structure and the metal planter was then drawn to ensure precise measurements. Locally harvested oakwood elements were prepared and carefully screwed onto the metal structure. The Pisanice ornament was cut using a CNC machine and hand-brushed for a flawless finish. Finally, two coats of tunga oil and wax were manually applied to protect and enhance the wood.

The dimensions of the furniture were carefully considered to optimize its lounge function and accommodate the client's specific requirements. With no front or back side, the continuous ornament greets users from the inside of the house, on the backside, as they pass by. The hidden storage within the bench opens with a gentle pressure on the side surface, providing a convenient and discreet storage solution.

The Pisanica garden furniture project began in April 2016 in Kranj and was completed in November 2016 in Kamnik. It has been recognized as one of the finalists for the Wooden Icon award in 2017, showcasing its exceptional design and craftsmanship.

Eva Strukelj and Ignacio Lopez Sola conducted extensive research to ensure the furniture's functionality, durability, and emotional appeal. The metal structure was chosen for its strength and resistance to weather exposure, while the design of the table was intended to give it a solid and strong appearance. The challenge was to find a clean form that would allow the graphic strength of the pattern to shine without overwhelming the design.

The Pisanica garden furniture is a testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity. With its intricate patterns, hidden storage, and attention to detail, it offers a unique and visually striking addition to any outdoor space.
