Met Bookshop: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Contemporary Design

VI Design Inspired by Chinese Traditional Books

This work by Lu Zhao & Genle Zhu draws inspiration from the layout of Chinese traditional books, specifically the modality of the logo which originates from the ancient book's binding and layout. Through refinement, a contemporary style is presented while maintaining the essence of the traditional book.

Met Bookshop's logo design stands out with its unique properties. It consists of two parts: the graphic logo and the character logo. The character logo includes Met Bookshop's publishing branch and retail branch. The main body of the character logo is transformed from the Chinese character "Jian Dao Shu Wu," imitating the modality of layout and seal of Chinese ancient book covers. After simplification and abstraction, the logo retains an oriental yet contemporary melody.

The graphic logo is a simplified version of the character logo, integrating the form of three capital words: MBS, which stands for Met Bookshop. The shape of the logo can also be seen as a bookshelf with four books, allowing people to easily identify the function of the logo from its shape.

This design showcases the seamless integration of traditional Chinese elements with contemporary design principles, making it truly unique. The combination of the graphic and character logos creates a visually appealing and meaningful representation of Met Bookshop's identity.

Met Bookshop's logo has been widely recognized and awarded for its creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018 in the category of Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its blend of tradition and contemporary design, Met Bookshop's logo is a testament to the power of incorporating cultural heritage into modern aesthetics.
