Russian Incentive: A Multifunctional Look & Feel

The Discovery Star Awards is an internal incentive program that recognizes outstanding performance within Discovery. In 2017, qualifiers of the Star Award were rewarded with a fully paid trip to Russia. To create a memorable experience, designer Kim Francey developed the Russian Star Design, a captivating look and feel for various print and digital collateral used in communication between Discovery and the qualifying individuals.

The design draws inspiration from two iconic Russian landmarks: Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow and the Church on Spilled Blood in St Petersburg. These landmarks, along with the stylized Khokhloma pattern, are incorporated throughout the design, creating a beautiful rendition of the essence of Russia.

Khokhloma is a traditional Russian folk art known for its distinctive flower patterns, predominantly using red, green, and gold on a black background. This unique style of hand painting and national ornament fabrication is often applied to wooden objects, giving them a heavier, metal-like appearance. By incorporating the Khokhloma style into the design, Francey captures the rich cultural heritage of Russia.

The Russian Star Design stands out due to its ability to evoke a sense of exclusivity and prestige, aligning with the honor of the Star Award itself. The design encompasses the essence of Russia, allowing qualifiers to feel that the trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Using Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, Francey brought the Russian Star Design to life. The design is adaptable to various sizes, ranging from an A5 printed menu to a responsive digital application.

Recognized for its excellence, the Russian Star Design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Russian Star Design integrates industry best practices and exhibits competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

With its unique blend of Russian tradition, iconic landmarks, and exclusive feel, the Russian Star Design captures the essence of Russia and builds excitement around the Discovery Star Awards incentive trip.
