Loop by Loop: A Unique Approach to Private Apartment Building Design

An Unfinished Concrete Shell Transformed into a Modern Living Space

An abandoned concrete building shell, acquired with the intention to create a large apartment for private habitation. The developed design strategy makes use of the unfinished state and the exposed concrete is regarded as a neutral backdrop against which the spaces for habitation are designed. Therefore, finishes contrast with and wrap the concrete only there where needed. Concrete was erased to allow for loop-like structures to be inserted. On these loops life takes centre stage. Executed like freestanding pieces of furniture, each is finished in a different material.

The Loop by Loop project, designed by renowned architect ir Frank la Rivière, showcases a unique approach to private apartment building design. The project takes an unfinished concrete shell and transforms it into a modern living space that combines functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.

The inspiration for this design came from the site itself, with its unfinished building. The notion that the condition of abandonment could generate new ideas and approaches led to the strategy of erasing and inserting to achieve the client's requirements in an architectural expressive way. The goal was to make the best use of the concrete shell as an intermediary entity.

What sets Loop by Loop apart is the use of loops as freestanding pieces of furniture that serve as the focal point of each space. Each loop is finished in a different material, creating a unique and visually appealing experience. For example, the dining kitchen features bamboo, an environmentally friendly material that absorbs CO2 better than trees. The living area is adorned with galvanized steel plate, while the guest room showcases vulcanized paper made from recycled pulp. The children's bedroom is adorned with cushioned denim fabric, adding a touch of comfort and playfulness.

The design also incorporates color as a distinguishing feature. Each space is assigned a specific color, which is expressed in the form of a loop. This creates a cohesive and harmonious atmosphere throughout the apartment.

One of the design challenges was dealing with the existing structure, which had not been constructed according to the designer's specifications. The structural engineer played a crucial role in ensuring the viability of the alterations proposed and checking the strength of the concrete through on-site tests. By strategically erasing parts of the existing structure, the design team was able to create larger spaces and a better flow of space.

The Loop by Loop project is not only visually stunning but also sustainable. The use of environmentally friendly materials and the incorporation of sustainable design principles contribute to a more eco-conscious living environment.

Overall, Loop by Loop showcases the innovative and creative approach of ir Frank la Rivière in transforming an unfinished concrete shell into a modern and functional private apartment building. The project has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2018, highlighting its outstanding design and contribution to quality of life improvements.
