SKYLINE: A Modern and Open Residential House Design

Creating a Delicate and Simple Living Space

Inspired by Master Kisho Kurokawa's Grey Space, renowned designer Armin Cheng has transformed an old residence in Taipei, Taiwan into a modern and open living space. With a focus on maximizing natural light and ventilation, this design offers a unique blend of functionality and simplicity.

In Taipei, many old residences suffer from functional obstacles such as leaking, poor lighting, and ventilation. However, ARMIN CHENG has taken a bold approach by tearing down the old layout and creating an all-open space. By strategically arranging connected windows on the light-facing surface, the design introduces ample natural light and fresh air circulation, resulting in a modern style that exudes both delicacy and simplicity.

The balcony, which was previously included in the interior space, has been expanded to showcase the breathtaking skyline of the city. The kitchen island, connected to the dining table, serves as the axis of the living space, creating a multifunctional hub for daily activities. The original narrow three rooms have been transformed into a spacious main bedroom, complete with an elevated Japanese-room area, walk-in closet, and main bathroom. A gracefully designed wall separates the public and private areas, ensuring privacy and functionality.

The design specifications of SKYLINE include a widened balcony with accordant wooden flooring on both sides of the sliding door, creating an ambivalent space that seamlessly connects the indoors and outdoors. The wide public space centers around a marble table, which is connected to the kitchen island, providing a visually clear and open atmosphere. The cabinets against the wall and the wall itself are designed in the same color tone, seamlessly integrating the mass into the background and creating a sophisticated and harmonious environment.

ARMIN CHENG's design for SKYLINE prioritizes the comfort and usability of the space. By carefully considering the needs of the single female owner, the design offers a real-life oriented space that balances functionality and beauty. The materials used, including faux concrete, plywood, semi-precious stones, and real-wood floor, contribute to the modern style and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skills, and resourcefulness. ARMIN CHENG's SKYLINE design showcases the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to the improvement of quality of life and making the world a better place.
