The Script: A Cinematic Journey in Interior Design

CM Jao and Ken Cheung's Award-Winning Cinema Design Inspired by the Art of Scriptwriting

Discover the unique design journey of "The Script," a cinema interior that pays homage to the art of scriptwriting. This award-winning design by CM Jao and Ken Cheung takes audiences on a visual narrative, transforming the cinema experience into an immersive story.

The inspiration for "The Script" came from the fundamental element of filmmaking - the script. Just as a pile of paper can work magic in films, sketches and drafts on paper can also breathe life into interior design. The design team envisioned a book of script being thrown into the air, with papers forming mesmerizing curves that open a pathway for the audience to wander into a world of films. This concept was then cast into the interior space of the cinema.

The unique properties of "The Script" lie in its careful choice of shapes and lighting to portray the state of mind of a script. The cinema is divided into four parts: opening, developing, changing, and concluding - the four steps of Chinese regulated classic writing. These four parts follow in order of an average audience's journey, from the entrance of the cinema to the screening rooms, each part designed to enhance the cinematic experience.

The design team faced the challenge of making a still space as engaging as a film. To overcome this, they broke down the cinema into pieces, as if freezing the screen at their favorite moment of a film. They successfully turned the cinema into a series of moving pictures, letting the audience embrace a holistic cinematic experience.

"The Script" started in May 2016 in Shenzhen, China and was completed in May 2017. The design team included CM Jao, Ken Cheung, and Shanny Cheung. The project was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. The Silver A' Design Award is rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.

The intellectual property rights of "The Script" belong to Oft Interiors Ltd., 2017. The visual content regarding this design is credited to NKCHU. This innovative design not only provides a unique cinema experience but also serves as a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces and creating engaging narratives.
