Kulms: Redefining Stackable Chairs with Elegance and Functionality

A Modern Twist on a Classic Design

The inspiration behind the Kulms Chair comes from the iconic stackable chairs of the past, such as the famous Panton chair by Verner Panton in the 1960s. Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, the designers behind Kulms, sought to redefine the simple function of a seating device and elevate its functionality and mobility. The result is a chair that not only serves its purpose but also adds a touch of elegance to any space.

Kulms is a series of stackable chairs that come in two configurations: Kulms 01 with three legs and Kulms 02 with four legs. Both types can be stacked up to seven or eight chairs high. What sets the Kulms Chair apart is its smooth curved surface, which gives it a simple yet elegant look. The designers have managed to create a chair that is not only functional but also visually appealing.

The manufacturing process of the Kulms Chair involves the use of CNC milling technology with plywood sheets. The sheets are horizontally laminated, and after the lamination process, the body of the chair is sanded and painted with lacquer paint. This combination of technology and craftsmanship ensures that each chair is made to perfection.

With dimensions of 32 inches in height, 21 inches in depth, 17 inches in width, and a seating height of 18 inches, the Kulms Chair is designed to provide both comfort and style. Its sleek and compact design makes it suitable for various settings, whether as a study chair or a guest chair. When not in use, the chairs can be easily stacked together, saving space and adding a touch of sophistication to any room.

The Kulms Chair was designed in New York City in 2008, with the prototype being exhibited at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in 2010. It was officially launched in the USA in 2011 after the ICFF. The chair has since been showcased at various exhibitions, including the Tokyo Design Tide in 2011 and the Taiwan Designers Week in 2016.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was creating the perfect stackable curvature. The designers went through multiple iterations to ensure that the chairs could be stacked without any conflicts. After numerous revisions, the Kulms Chair achieved its simple yet elegant form.

The Kulms Chair is a testament to the designers' commitment to creating a functional and visually appealing piece of furniture. Its unique design and attention to detail have earned it recognition in the design world. In 2018, the Kulms Chair was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its outstanding creativity and ingenious design.

With its sleek and elegant design, the Kulms Chair is not just a piece of furniture; it is a work of art that adds a touch of sophistication to any space. Whether used in a home, office, or public setting, the Kulms Chair is sure to make a statement.
