Convenience: A Temporary Lavatory Incorporating Urban Sewage

Award-winning Design by Industrial Design College in LAFA

Convenience is a unique temporary lavatory that solves the problem of finding a suitable place to empty one's bladder in public spaces. Designed by the talented team at Industrial Design College in LAFA, this innovative solution incorporates urban sewage into its design, making it ideal for congregation plazas, construction sites, and streets without public lavatories.

Imagine this scenario: you're on a first date in a bustling congregation plaza, and suddenly, you have an urgent need to relieve yourself. With Convenience, you no longer have to leave your date alone. This temporary lavatory is specifically designed to be placed anywhere with a sewer line and a manhole cover. Its unique appearance ensures that the pass water will be discharged directly into the sewage well, eliminating the need for urine storage.

One of the standout features of Convenience is its self-cleaning capability on rainy days. The design allows rainwater to clean the lavatory, ensuring hygiene and convenience for users. Additionally, Convenience is incredibly lightweight, making it easy for municipal workers to move and install as needed.

The installation process is simple and efficient. The municipal apartment can remove the manhole cover and place Convenience on top of the discharge. To prevent the cover from being lost, it can be securely placed in the groove between the backs of two urinals.

The design of Convenience posed a challenge for the team initially. Finding the right place to position the manhole cover was crucial to achieving the desired effect of self-balance. After numerous sketches and discussions, the team successfully resolved this challenge, ensuring the stability and functionality of the lavatory.

Convenience was realized using plastic injection molding technology, resulting in a sturdy and durable structure. Its dimensions of 1300mm width, 1400mm depth, and 2000mm height provide ample space for users.

The project, which started in April 2017 at the LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio, was completed in January 2018 at the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA. Extensive research underpinned the design, focusing on addressing the issue of finding suitable temporary facilities for men. The team's innovative solution of incorporating urban sewage into the design ensures cleanliness and proper disposal of waste.

Convenience has received recognition for its ingenuity and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that showcase outstanding technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With Convenience, Industrial Design College in LAFA has demonstrated their commitment to creating innovative designs that enhance our daily lives. This temporary lavatory not only provides a practical solution for public spaces but also promotes environmental protection through the incorporation of urban sewage.
