577 Residence: A Contemporary Interpretation of Historical Architecture

Integrating Technology and Tradition in Jeddah

The 577 Residence project, designed by Ahmed Taha and Hattan Basrawi, is a stunning example of how contemporary technologies and historical architectural treatments can be seamlessly integrated into a residential building. Located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this 6-story structure offers 20 apartments, each with a large living area and views over three green courtyards.

The design concept behind 577 Residence was to create a contemporary interpretation of the local historical architecture, while strategically utilizing natural materials, colors, and openings. The result is a building that not only pays homage to the rich architectural heritage of Jeddah but also provides a comfortable and sustainable living environment.

One of the standout features of the building is its central courtyard, inspired by the traditional houses of Jeddah. This courtyard not only allows for natural ventilation and light to flood the living spaces but also provides privacy and rhythm within the building's proportions.

In terms of sustainability, the 577 Residence project incorporates several innovative technologies and design strategies. High-performance glass is used for the curtain walls and windows, while coral local stone cladding and perforated metal sheets (made from recycled materials) provide shading and filtration of light. The building also features wooden louvers and shading screens, which further enhance energy efficiency.

Other sustainable features include an external cavity wall made from local materials, a planted green roof, solar panels, and highly efficient equipment for lighting, air-conditioning, and water management. These measures not only reduce the building's environmental impact but also contribute to the overall well-being of its residents.

The 577 Residence project faced several challenges, particularly in terms of space constraints and meeting the privacy and cultural needs of the end users. However, the design team successfully overcame these challenges by adopting a minimalist, modern aesthetic and incorporating elements that are historically found in Jeddah, such as natural coral stones.

The building is not only visually striking but also highly functional. It features advanced security systems, ground parking accessed by an elevator, and lift lobbies on each floor that overlook the green courtyards through perforated shading screens. These elements provide a unique and unprecedented experience for the residents.

The 577 Residence project, which started in May 2017 and is set to be completed in August 2018, is a testament to the power of design to blend tradition and innovation. By seamlessly integrating contemporary technologies and historical architectural treatments, Ahmed Taha and Hattan Basrawi have created a residential building that not only stands out visually but also prioritizes sustainability and the well-being of its residents.
