The Iskilar design breaks away from conventional parameters, offering a unique connection between the interior and exterior. The occupants can appreciate the surrounding nature, as the design seamlessly integrates the two. With a minimalistic approach, the residence reflects the simple lifestyle of the occupants, featuring neutral aesthetics in furniture and decoration styles.
The standout feature of the Iskilar project is the Gallery Facade, which gives a monumental scale to the structure, piquing the curiosity of visitors. Each zone within the building has its own aura, boldly outlined through this design. The use of earthen textures dominates the material palette, with brick walls serving as a canvas for the client's artwork.
The realization of the Iskilar design involved innovative techniques and materials. The flooring is done with Indian Patented stone, adorned with patterns of terracotta beads and small lamps. Filler slabs cast with concrete block fillers replace traditional RCC slabs, with embedded terracotta pots acting as intriguing light fittings. Wooden, steel, and bamboo pergolas create interesting light patterns above the courts and terrace.
The Iskilar project spans a site dimension of 23m x 15.25m, with a total area of 350.75 sq.m. The public, semi-public, and private areas are segregated into three blocks, connected by courtyards acting as multi-activity spaces. The first block houses the art gallery and a rainwater harvesting tank, while the second block includes the living area, kitchen, and terrace. The third block comprises two bedrooms on the ground floor and a small workspace plus a guest bedroom on the first floor.
Designed to suit the climatic conditions of the site, the Iskilar project incorporates natural light sources through glass bottles inserted in the walls, arranged in patterns resembling constellations. Fixed glass windows enhance the quality of light, providing direct sunlight in most areas. Ventilation is achieved through louvers, and inbuilt seating and furniture go beyond the conventional idea of formal living spaces.
The Iskilar project, located in Talegaon, a small town near Pune, India, was completed between September 2014 and February 2016. Extensive research was conducted to fully understand the client's needs and develop a detailed scope and program. The design overcame challenges of maintaining the vernacular character of the old structure while creating a building that connects with the surrounding nature.
The Iskilar design has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award in 2018. This award acknowledges its well-designed, practical, and innovative characteristics, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Iskilar project stands as a testament to the designers' ability to create a space that seamlessly blends art, architecture, and lifestyle.
