The project, located in Shanghai, is the third branch of Chez Shibata. The design concept revolves around "Laboratory Shibata" and "Pastryclass Shibata." The floor plan was meticulously crafted to accommodate nine different functions within a 200-square-meter space. The north elevation features 23 high-functional iron frame French windows, seamlessly blending the interior and exterior spaces.
The owner's vision for the space was to create a multifunctional area that serves as an eat-in zone, kitchen, and exhibition area. To achieve this, the design team carefully selected materials that aligned with their standards of cost-effectiveness, durability, and the ability to showcase the design concept. Concrete perforated bricks, wire laths, epoxy floor, terrazzo, and steel plates were chosen, with a particular emphasis on the concrete perforated bricks. These bricks were stacked in a rough manner and painted white, evoking the workshop atmosphere of Paris. The terrazzo and epoxy floor were used to create a seamless finish.
The challenges of this project were twofold. Firstly, the space needed to accommodate nine different functions, which required careful planning and design. Secondly, the high density of the floor plan needed to be alleviated to create a more open and inviting atmosphere. To address this, 23 high-functional iron frame French windows were strategically placed on the north elevation. Some of these windows are fixed, while others serve as entrances or folding doors. The seamless integration of these windows not only provides unobstructed views of the shop but also presents a cohesive and inviting facade to customers.
Chez Shibata 3rd Patisserie Shop is a testament to the brand founder's experience in Paris and the designer's creative prowess. The design concept of "Laboratory Shibata: A Modified Paris Workshop" has been brought to life through meticulous planning and research. The result is a beautiful and practical space where nine functions seamlessly coexist within a limited area. The 23 high-functional windows on the north elevation blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior, creating an inviting atmosphere for customers. The use of environmentally friendly materials further enhances the overall design concept. From the construction of the kitchen to the display cabinets and multifunctional space, every detail has been carefully considered.
This exceptional design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness. By incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, these designs contribute to improvements in quality of life, making the world a better place.
