Spirocco: A Smart Inhaler Device

Improving Asthma Medication Delivery

As of 2011, 235–330 million people worldwide are affected by asthma. Many patients who use asthma inhalers do so incorrectly, either due to insufficient medicine leaving the canister or improper inhalation techniques. Maform Design Studio recognized the need for a solution to help patients learn the correct way to use their inhalers. The result is Spirocco, a smart inhaler device that aims to improve medication delivery and enhance the user experience.

Spirocco is a unique accessory that attaches to a standard inhaler, assisting users in learning how to deliver the prescribed amount of medication effectively. By analyzing the timing and amount of medication inhaled, Spirocco provides real-time feedback to the user. This data can be reviewed and shared with doctors, allowing for better monitoring and management of asthma symptoms. The device utilizes advanced technology to measure changes in air pressure and calculate medication particle flow.

During the design process, Maform Design Studio prioritized compatibility with standard inhalers. Prototypes were 3D printed using FDM technology and tested on different types of inhalers to ensure functionality. The final product is made using plastic injection molding technology, using medical-grade ABS plastic. With dimensions of 10mm x 20mm x 40mm, Spirocco is compact and portable, making it convenient for daily use.

Spirocco's interaction is straightforward. The user attaches the device to their inhaler and operates it through Spirocco. By pushing the upper unit, the medication flow is initiated. Historical data and trends can be accessed through a smartphone app, allowing users to track their progress. Doctors can review this data on a cloud-based platform via a web application, enabling them to provide personalized advice and support.

Maform Design Studio conducted extensive research during the development of Spirocco. Field studies, client interviews, and market research were conducted to ensure the device met the needs of users and addressed existing challenges. The ergonomic shape of Spirocco was a significant creative and technical challenge, as it needed to be compatible with various inhaler devices while maintaining a user-friendly appearance.

Spirocco's design has been recognized for its innovation and impact. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, technical skill, and contribute to improving quality of life.

Spirocco is not only a smart medical device but also a testament to the power of design in improving healthcare experiences. By providing real-time feedback and personalized advice, Spirocco empowers asthma patients to take control of their medication delivery and ultimately leads to better management of their condition.
