Welldosha: A Modern Spa Lobby Interior with a Traditional Touch

Yu-Ting Wang and Chien-Hsign Chen's Award-Winning Design Merges Old and New

Welldosha, a spa lobby interior designed by Yu-Ting Wang and Chien-Hsign Chen, is a unique blend of traditional Taiwanese elements and modern aesthetics. Inspired by the concept of wellness, the design connects the old with the new, local materials with modern space, and the building structure with the natural flow. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, is a testament to the designers' innovative approach and technical expertise.

The design of Welldosha is set in a 15-year-old renovated building, with the aim of preserving the spirit of the company and extending the concept of the beauty of modern women. The designers were inspired by the corporation's idea of bringing wellness to people, and this is reflected in their use of local materials and modern space. The design successfully merges the old and the new, creating a sense of wellness that extends from the inside to the outside, from the old to the young, and to different characteristics of modern women.

One of the unique features of the design is the use of traditional soil wall, a material that represents the traditional Taiwanese women's concept of home and hard work. This element is complemented by a moss wall introduced into the main wall of the site, symbolizing the strength and modernity of women today. The polished concrete flooring, a remnant of the building's original structure, further enhances the connection between the old and the new.

The space is designed for a women's spa, featuring a reception space, recreation space, and a dining space. The design is flexible, with all units designed to be movable to open up the space for different uses. The dining area is separated by sliding doors that can keep the smell of food from interfering with the lobby, but can also be opened up to create a larger space for other events.

The project, which started in September 2017 in Taichung, Taiwan, and finished in October 2017, posed several challenges. The main challenge was designing a space that connected the old with the new and served multiple purposes, all within a very short construction timeframe. Despite these challenges, the designers were able to create a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Welldosha is a testament to Yu-Ting Wang and Chien-Hsign Chen's innovative approach and technical expertise. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, is a reflection of their commitment to creating spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and meaningful. With its unique blend of traditional and modern elements, Welldosha is a perfect example of how design can enhance the concept of wellness and the beauty of modern women.
