Space: An Award-Winning Pendant Lamp by Daniel Mato

Inspired by Celestial Orbits, Space Lamp Brings a Touch of the Cosmos to Interior Design

Space, a pendant lamp designed by Daniel Mato, has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018. The lamp's unique design, inspired by the orbits of asteroids, is a testament to the innovative use of materials and technology in the realm of interior design.

The design of Space is primarily inspired by the impact of gravity on the orbits of celestial bodies. The invisible lines connecting the ends of the poles are meant to visualize this concept, creating an imaginary infinite orb. The unconventional form of the lamp makes it a compelling and prominent element of any room, with the anodized aluminium poles creating ever-changing shades of glitter depending on the light conditions.

The lamp's form is defined by the anodized aluminium poles, fixed in a 3D printed ring, following a specific geometry. This shape is integrated with the internal white glass with a LED bulb inside, and its stray light. Despite its relatively large size, the usage of aluminium ensures a surprisingly light framework. The lamp is delivered partly assembled to reduce the size of the package, with final assembly after shipping according to the provided manuals.

The project began in April 2017 in Budapest and was completed in March 2018. A series of researches and numerous prototypes were created to ensure the best look from all possible angles. The light source and the inner glass shade were examined in many variations until the proper solution was found. Experiments with the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology were performed to reach the desired quality and perfect assembly for the manufacturing of the product.

One of the primary challenges in the design process was the complex shape's feasibility, easy assembly, and the adaptability of the SLS technology to the lamp family. Particular attention was paid to the clearness of the design and to cover the technical details and fastenings as much as possible. This was especially challenging, since the lamp is delivered as partly assembled in order to reduce package size.

The designer of this pendant was inspired by the elliptic and parabolic orbits of asteroids. The unique shape of the lamp is defined by the anodized aluminium poles that are precisely arranged in a 3D printed ring, creating the perfect balance. The white glass shade in the middle harmonizes with the poles and adds to its sophisticated appearance. Some say the lamp resembles an angel, others think it looks like a graceful bird.

Space is part of a new lamp family and can be used as a single unit or combined with other types. There's a wide variety of options to create a unique atmosphere. The design was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018, rewarding top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
