Mirror Chair

Chair with magnifying glass and planter

The Mirror Chair, designed by Guangcai Yin and Sha Yang, draws inspiration from the beauty of nature and the intricate details of plants. It aims to provide a unique and immersive experience for users to appreciate the flourishing greenery while basking in the sun.

The Mirror Chair stands out with its distinctive features. Each chair is equipped with a backrest that houses a mirror with magnifying capabilities. This allows people to sit and observe the intricate details of plants up close, magnifying the texture and beauty of every leaf. The chairs are designed to cater to different needs. The chair on the left features a round mirror and is suitable for individual use. The height of the mirror can be adjusted to accommodate plants of varying heights, ensuring optimal viewing angles. On the other hand, the chair on the right is designed for two or more people to sit together. It features a square mirror that not only amplifies the details of the plants but also presents a captivating oil painting-like aesthetic.

The Mirror Chair is crafted using metal and glass. The chair legs are made using metal bending techniques and are treated with lacquer for a sleek finish. The magnifying glass is embedded in acrylic organic glass, ensuring durability and clarity.

Specifications for the Mirror Chair are as follows: the round chair measures L:440mm, W:300mm, H:950mm (seat height: 450mm), while the square chair measures L:1210mm, W:480mm, H:1000mm (seat height: 450mm).

This design seamlessly integrates the beauty of plants into our daily lives. It promotes a harmonious coexistence between nature and humans, making it a sustainable and meaningful addition to urban environments.

The Mirror Chair project commenced in May 2017 at the Shanghai Art and Design Academy. Extensive research was conducted on the relationship between plants and daily life, including visits to flower markets to study plant varieties and textures. The design team also analyzed and compared the characteristics of different plants, as well as selected suitable materials such as metal and glass.

The Mirror Chair presented several challenges throughout its development. Initially, the team had to find a way to showcase the unique beauty of plants. Inspiration came from observing how children use magnifying glasses to explore their surroundings and how archaeologists use them to study artifacts. Additionally, challenges arose during the manufacturing process and material selection, particularly in achieving the desired surface treatment for the metal components.

The Mirror Chair with its magnifying mirrors offers a captivating and immersive experience for plant enthusiasts. It received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical skill, and contribute to improving quality of life.
