Reviving Tradition: The 'Happiness' Table Lamp by Gudao Design Studio

Award-Winning Design Merges Chinese Culture with Modern Functionality

Designed to be more than just a source of light, 'Happiness' is a piece of home decor that adds a touch of charm to any space. The design draws inspiration from the Chinese culture, specifically the image of a magpie perched on a plum tree branch, a symbol of impending joy. The lamp's bulb, designed to resemble a magpie, can be detached from the branch-like stand and used as a portable night light, adding a layer of versatility to the design.

The uniqueness of 'Happiness' lies not only in its cultural symbolism but also in its technical features. The main part of the bulb is crafted from a silicone mold, offering a soft touch and increased interaction. The lamp employs contact charging with a magnet and features a switch at the bottom of the bulb. The stand and base are made from ABS mold, with the latter containing a metal plate for added weight. The lamp's specifications include a voltage of 5V-1A, a battery capacity of 50mAh, a color temperature of 3200K, and a rated power of 0.5W.

The design process for 'Happiness' began in July 2017 in Nanjing and concluded in September of the same year. The project was driven by a desire to fill a gap in the Chinese market for home decor that caters to spiritual needs while also being individual and interesting. The Gudao Design Studio team spent considerable time researching traditional Chinese culture and lighting devices to create a product that would resonate with modern users while preserving the essence of traditional Chinese artistry.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was ensuring that the lamp satisfied modern functionality while also capturing the essence of Chinese-style scenes. The team drew styling elements from traditional Chinese painting, such as the plum blossom stem, and incorporated a mountain-shaped tray and ink black base to recreate the vigor and artistic conception of the Chinese plum blossom. The bulb and base use rounded design elements, with circular buds as decorative parts, all treated with gold-plating for a touch of elegance.

'Happiness' has been recognized for its innovative design and cultural significance, winning the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation. 'Happiness' is a testament to Gudao Design Studio's commitment to reviving traditional culture through modern design, serving as a beacon of joy and happiness in any home.
