Wuhan City: A Design Reflecting Culture and Innovation

A Symbol of Wuhan's Multi-Culture and Vitality

The logo of Wuhan City adopts the "Chinese character" of Chinese culture as its prototype, incorporating the English letters "W" and "H" to symbolize Wuhan's multi-culture and vitality. With elements extracted from ancient bronzeware and lacquerware, this logo showcases Wuhan's rich history and combines it with modern expression techniques. It also embodies the traditional philosophy of "harmony between man and nature" in Chinese culture.

This work, created by designer Zhanglian Yan, serves as the logo for Wuhan World Design City, representing the city's image. It not only conveys the contemporary design concept of Wuhan but also incorporates traditional Chinese culture and thought. In October 2017, Wuhan, China became a "City of Design" in the United Nations creative network city, and a ceremony was held in Paris in November to celebrate this achievement.

The logo is realized through various mediums such as printing and screen display, making it adaptable to any material. Its specifications require a minimum height of 24mm to ensure visibility and legibility.

Used as the nameplate for the Wuhan "City of Design" Ceremony, awarded by UNESCO, this logo also serves as a visual representation for all kinds of large-scale design activities organized and promoted by the Wuhan government.

The project started in October 2017 in Wuhan, China, and was completed in November 2017. The logo is currently used by the Wuhan city government and was showcased at a ceremony and exhibition held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The design process involved extensive research into the traditional cultural elements of Wuhan and China, aiming to showcase deep-seated thoughts that are attractive to both the local population and international audiences. By using contemporary design expression methods to convey tradition, the logo has garnered love and recognition from all who encounter it.

The main challenges faced during the creation of this logo were finding the perfect balance between a city's traditional culture and modern design sensibilities, as well as identifying the element that best represents the entire city's culture. The final design successfully combines Eastern and Western languages, ancient Chinese cultural artifacts, and ancient philosophical thoughts, all presented through modern visual design techniques.

The logo of Wuhan City, known as the "City of Design" in the United Nations creative network city, is a testament to the fusion of Eastern and Western text forms, Chinese traditional cultural thoughts, and contemporary internationalized design forms. It embodies the Chinese traditional philosophical thought of "Heaven and Man together," showcasing the city's commitment to culture and innovation.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and ingenuity, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The logo contributes to quality of life improvements and makes the world a better place.
